The Science of Brake Fade: Understanding Outgassing When you apply the brakes, the friction between the pad and the rotor generates intense heat. Under extreme conditions, surface temperatures can exceed the stable operating limit of the pad's binding resins. At this point, the resins begin to burn and turn into a gas.
This gas becomes trapped in the microscopic space between the pad and the rotor. Under pressure, it acts like a thin cushion of air, effectively "lifting" the pad away from the rotor. This is a specific type of brake fade: just like a car hydroplaning on water, the brake pad "gas-planes" on a layer of hot vapor.
